There are over 32 million people in the United States that have assumed the role of caregiver for loved ones of all ages who are confronted with a health challenge of some kind.
In some cases, the health challenge might result from birth, illness or accident. In other cases, it might be part of the process of growing old, but is no less resented for all that it is part of the natural process of aging.
Any health challenge which prevents a person from doing the things they were accustomed to doing, or holds them back from being like other people, can be a cause of real distress and stress. Here are some suggestions for helping a loved one cope if they are suddenly presented with an unexpected heath issue or disability.
1. Let them express their feelings.
Let your loved one know it is okay to cry, shout, throw tantrums, get angry, and hate the world. Do not take it personally. Through sharing their feelings, they can relieve them. But they have to be willing to admit to them in the first place in order to be able to deal with them in a productive way.
2. Don’t suffocate them with concern.
It is only natural to want to try to make things easier for our loved one but in some senses it can make it harder on them. They might be embarrassed, resent being a ‘burden’ or seen as ‘less than’ they used to be, and so on. Sometimes, they do not want people hovering all over the place. They will just want to be left alone and will need some rest and time to heal. Give your health-challenged loved one time with their own thoughts. Just remind them that you are there if they need you, and leave it at that.
3. Don’t treat them as disabled or molly-coddle them.
Understand that they are suffering, but expect them to do the best that they can. Regardless of whether the situation is long term or short term, take things one day at a time and start from where they are, and what they can do, rather than what they wish they could do.
4. Be an advocate. Help them to get what they want and need, if they ask for it. It they are willing to use a wheelchair or walker, great. Help them to get one. If they do not want to use one, that is fine too.
5. Take of yourself as the caregiver. Don’t stay in the house on call all the time. Do the things you love, within reason, and stay in touch with your support network. If you are in a happy and positive state of mind, this can help your home environment be less pressured and stressful.

We all complain how busy we are at work, but studies show that even a few minutes of exercise are better than none.
Many of us in the tech age are stuck at our desks from at lest 9 to 5, but that doesn’t mean we have to be ‘cubicle potatoes’-like a couch potato, only even more spread out.
Studies have shown that even people who do exercise regularly may not all be able to combat the effects of such a sedentary lifestyle.
So if want to try to stay fit, here are a couple of ideas to try?
+Stand up every 30 minutes, stretch a little, walk, or imaginary jump rope in place.
+Fidget. Get your circulation moving, even while you are working.
+Take 15 minute breaks and walk to the restroom and the around the floor.
+Set your chair back to be at an angle wider than 90 degrees to help keep your back flexible.
+On a business call in your office? Stand or walk and chat at the same time.
+Try some desk yoga.
These ideas will not entirely replace a proper workout but they can certainly help you keep moving every day during all the hours you are in the office.

Without an emergency fund set aside to help cope with life’s unexpected events, such as an illness or job loss, a family can soon find their household budget in a shambles. Despite their best efforts, they can soon be in serious danger of falling behind on their rent or mortgage payments and other essentials.
Creating a financial emergency fund to plan ahead in case the unthinkable ever happens is one of the best ways to protect you and your family from the negative impact of a sudden financial emergency. Unexpected medical expenses are said to be the cause of over 60 percent of personal bankruptcies filed in the United States in recent years. Financial planning and budgeting is not about feeling miserable and deprived. A budget is actually a road map to financial success, with you having more financial freedom than ever before.
In this guide, you will learn what an emergency fund is, how much you need to save, and the best ways to plan ahead for financial emergencies so that if they do occur, their impact will not be so devastating.
You will also learn about the impact of financial stress on your health and relationships, and why your emergency fund can help you start living life on your own terms, free of the crushing money worries presently affecting millions of Americans.
Discover if your own attitudes to money might be preventing you from having the successful life of your dreams. Learn the best ways to pay down debt and start saving, and the best places to save your money.
If you have been living from paycheck to paycheck, or have no idea how you are going to be able to afford a trip to the dentist, now is the time to start taking charge of your financial future. Learn the best ways to stretch your budget further, and how to make even more money, to help you start saving for all of your goals, including your emergency fund.

Many people claim that they do not exercise because they have no time. One of the problems with this is that many people still have a vision of exercise as something which takes place in a gym for an hour and involves a lot of grunting, sweating and aches and pains.
Nothing could be further from the truth. First, let’s broaden our definition of exercise to include all forms of movement, including housework, walking your dog, using the stairs, and anything that does not involved you sitting or standing still for too long, except possibly for certain yoga postures.
The second thing to consider is how you spend your time each day. Yes, you might work or go to school for several hours a day, but where is your time really going? Keep a log for three days and write down everything you do, and the time you do it. We are betting you have a few spare minutes to squeeze in some keep-fit activity.
Did you know that even as little as 10 minutes, 4 times a day, is as effective as on 40-minute burst of activity?
A third area to look at in your attitude to exercise is that it does not have to be in the gym to be effective. The first and most obvious place you can start to increase your level of activity is while watching television. Get up and walk around, stretch, sit ups, crunches, jog or dance in place, use hand weights, do yoga or tai chi. In fact, do anything so long as you are not just sitting in the recliner.
When you first wake up, before you even get out of bed, do some stretches, yoga, crunches, or push ups. You can also do the same when heading to bed at night. Just be sure you do it about 30 minutes before you want to go to sleep, because exercise can be en energy booster and mood enhancer.
Look for ways to incorporate movement into all of your daily activities. For example, when you are going shopping at the mall or on your way to the office, take the stairs instead of the elevator or escalator. Going to the grocery store? Park at the far end of the parking lot to get in more walking (it is recommended that people take 10,000 steps a day).
If you are doing the housework, turn up the radio and pick up the pace. Spending time with the family? Get them up and moving as well. You can get out the bikes or head to the local park. Even just a walk before or after dinner instead of all running to your computer or TV of choice will keep you fit and help you reconnect with each other as a family every day. If it’s raining outside, you can head to the mall (but leave the plastic at home) or even walk around a large indoor parking garage together.
Are you stuck in the office for 8 hours? You don’t have to be. Take a walk during your lunch break, do steps and stretches at your desk, get a little putting cup if you like golf, try some desk yoga, anything that stops you from just sitting still for so many hours. Talking on the phone? Get up and walk around while you talk, put them on speakerphone and do yoga, toe touches, and more.
It is estimated now that at least 40% of all deaths can be considered preventable. Things could have been very different if the people in question had only taken the trouble to get more fit. Don’t be part of that grim statistic. There is no time like the present to start improving your health, so grab a couple of water bottles, and start walking.
