A lot of people hear the word mindfulness and think it is some New Age concept. In fact, it is thousands of years old, and is just one type of meditation. It is a simple one, but very useful, especially in our modern lives.

Meditation means to think. So what are thinking about when we do mindfulness meditation?

It could be our own thoughts, observing them as they pass like clouds floating across them sky. We can just watch without judging. And there is no need to be upset, because no thought can harm us, just as no storm cloud can damage the sky.

Mindfulness meditation can also be done in relation to movement or actions you are taking. Instead of doing them on auto-pilot, you pay close attention. Checking in with your 5 senses is often the easiest way to do this. Think about thing we do automatically, such as wash dishes, brush our teeth, or take a shower. How does our experience of these things change, and our mood and attitudes, if we actually pay attention and are mindful while we do them?
