Stress is all around us, leading to all sorts of physical and mental health issues that can start to take their toll if you are not careful. Stress causes a great deal of wear and tear on the body due to the ‘fight or flight’ response left over from our early caveman ancestors. Our response to stress in the office is the same as it would be if we were running away from a saber tooth tiger.
However, in the modern world, most of the stress we deal with every day is not life-threatening, it is merely inconvenient. But it can also often feel life-threatening, such as if you are worried about getting into trouble at your job or losing it, having money worries that make you wonder how you will ever be able to make ends meet, or relationship difficulties, where you fear the things have broken down and will not last.
Fortunately, there are many things you can do to stress less. There’s a case of putting a plan in place and making self-care your priority. When we are stressed, the last thing we think we can do is put ourselves first and take a 5-minute break. However, studies have shown that taking just a few minutes off can make you more productive, not less so.
If you have been feeling as though you are living in a pressure cooker and can’t escape stress no matter how hard you work to get ahead in your career, it might be time to take a step back and make learning stress relief techniques your priority. Your body and brain will thank you for it.
