Designing a Home Office to Welcome Visitors

Whether you have an online or offline business, a home office is necessary for a small business owner to stay organized and also to meet with potential clients. Here are some advantages of a home office:

* A place to work uninterrupted by your family

* A place to keep your equipment and workspace in one area and organize all of your business files

* It is a tax-deductible part of your home that can lower your taxable income

* A place to meet with visitors (your potential clients)

With an online small business, you never know when you might move into the offline realm. Even if you are a writer, local clients may want to meet with you in your office to hammer out details of a contract. Therefore, you need a place for them to come and see you.

Here are some ideas to utilize and to choose the right space for your home office:

* Choose a room with a door – If it is possible, a room with a door affords you privacy when meeting with clients. There may be children running around outside, but it is easier to tune them out when the door is closed. If you don’t have a door, create some sort of solution where the rest of the house is not visible from your office. Install a sliding door in the doorway to another room, use folding screens or use another creative idea.

* Allow your desk to be the center of the room – When clients visit, they will need a place to sit. It is easier if they are sitting across from you. In this case, use a separate tabletop for file folders and office supplies so that the majority of your desk top is free to work with your visitors.

* Use another table – If clients will be coming to your home office, you can create a separate work area in the office if you have space. In this case your desk can sit in the corner. The focal point will be the table with two or three comfortable chairs where you and your visitor(s) can hold a meeting.

* Let in the light – Use light-colored curtains or blinds to regulate the amount of light in the room. Schedule meetings in the morning or early afternoon when more light will be entering the room. If you don’t have a window in your office room, consider having a lighted ceiling fan to illuminate the entire room.

Design your home office with the potential client in mind. Make space for them to feel comfortable so you can earn their business.
