Ebola: How to Stay Safe

Learn more about the deadly Ebola virus, and how to stay safe.

Ebola was first isolated as a viral illness in 1976. Since that time, there have been several outbreaks of the disease, but the latest outbreak, which began in March 2014, is by far the largest and in terms of the number of people affected and the number of countries which have had to deal with cases of sick patients.

As with any severe illness outbreak, there is a lot of media attention, not all of it helpful and informative. In this guide, prominent health writer Carolyn Stone gives you the essentials on Ebola:

+what it is
+where it comes from
+how people become infected
+how to prevent its spread

in order to keep you and your family safe.

By knowing these facts, you can take action to avoid catching it. If you do catch it, learn what treatments are available. Above all, if you do catch it, learn what you need to do to stop it from spreading to the rest of your family, work colleagues and the general public.

Ebola IS serious, but at present, the risk in the United States is VERY small. It is only natural that the mere thought of Ebola can be terrifying for some due to its deadly nature, with around a 50% mortality rate.

However, it is important to put information about Ebola into perspective. Thus far, as of mid-October 2014, there have been fewer than 10,000 cases during this outbreak, and fewer than 5,000 deaths. It is a tragedy, of course, but other numbers are worth paying attention to as well. By contrast with Ebola, every YEAR, all over the world, there are 3 to 5 million cases of influenza, the flu, which result in 250,000 to 500,000 deaths annually.

Both the Ebola and the flu, and other infectious diseases, are preventable and controllable IF everyone behaves in a responsible manner to avoid becoming ill. Even if they are unfortunate enough to become ill, there is still a great deal we can each do to stop the spread of any infectious disease, including Ebola.
