How to Hire a Copywriter That Is Right for Your Business

Copywriters are specialists. If you’re not inclined to write your sales copy or you don’t have confidence in your skills, it makes sense to hire a specialist. After all, the better your sales copy performs, the more sales you’ll make – and the more money you’ll have in your pocket.

Of course all copywriters are not created equally. Many copywriters have their own unique style. Others specialize in a specific industry. And some may not fit your budget. Here’s how to hire a copywriter that is right for your business.

#1 Industry Experience

Look for copywriters that know and understand your industry. That doesn’t mean they have to specialize in it. However, when you talk to them you want to make sure they understand your audience and their unique problems. This is important because your copy has to persuade your prospects to take action. If the copywriter understands your prospects and their problems this will be a much easier task.

#2 Style

There are hundreds of different approaches and copywriting styles. And each copywriter you speak with probably has a style or approach that they believe in and use. Make sure their style matches your brand, business personality, and audience. For example, one copywriter might embrace the hard sell but if your audience prefers a story-telling style then the copy isn’t going to work as well as you’d like it to.

You can find out what style a copywriter uses simply by looking at their portfolio and/or talking to them.

#3 Schedule

A good copywriter probably has a full schedule and it may take a few weeks or months for them to fit you in. If you’re in a rush you may have to pay a lot more to get your project done on time. Make sure you hire a copywriter well in advance of your copy needs and launch.

#4 Policies and Procedure

What is the process your copywriter uses to generate your sales material? For example, do you have revisions? DO they need to interview you? Do you need to provide a sample product for them to review? Do they provide you with a first draft? Make sure you understand the process before you hire them.

#5 Results

Some copywriters know the conversion rate of their copy. Others don’t. Many clients simply don’t pass along the conversion rate to the copywriter so it’s tough for them to know. However, if they don’t know the results of their copy, you can read their testimonials and ask for references. Call the references and ask about conversion rates.

Finally, make sure the copywriter fits your budget. This is last on the list of criteria because first and foremost you want to hire an effective copywriter. If the sales copy does its job, your income will increase and the return on investment will be well worth it.
